Captain Cupcake asked:

It is 20 years old and won’t chime on the hour, but chimes on the 1/4 hour, 1/2 hour and 3/4 hour. When I get it re-synchronized so it rings the 1/4 hour on the 1/4 hour, the half hour on the half hour, etc., it gets off by 1/4 hour again when it won’t chime on the hour. I have oiled it according to directions, have made sure it is level on the floor and done everything else I was supposed to do, which I usually do when the time changes from standard to daylight savings or back. The only thing I can say is that changing it off daylight savings time last weekend messed it up some how. It never had messed it up all the other times in 20 years, so I’m really puzzled as to what to do.
It is an Emperor clock works and they cost more to repair either at the factory or a shop. I asked this question in order to avoid having to pay someone to fix it.

Banoland asked:

A couple of things here. First of all, just wondering if anyone knows the best brand of Grandfather Clock (Sligh, Ridgeway, Howard Miller, etc.)–if they’re all just the same, if you’re getting a used one.

Also, any opinions on the timing of the chiming? (Umm . . .) In other words, is it better to have them chime every 15 minutes or every half hour? Any advantages or disadvantages for either? We know we want one that shuts off at night.

Thanks!

Linden Chime wall clock chimes incorrectly?

clock movement
Bryan asked:

I have a quartz movement wall clock that my mother has owned forever. The face has arabic numerals & The only words are “Linden” above the center, and “Chime” below it. It looks similar to a Howard Miller Elliott wall clock. The clock works & will chime, but it’s supposed to chime once on the half hour – instead, it chimes for the hour. For instance – it will chime 7 times at 7:30, 8 times at 8:30, etc. rather than the one time it is supposed to. It’s already ben to a jeweler, and he was incapable of fixing it. Is there an easy way to fix this? Failing that, how do I tell who made the movement & where I can get a new one?
Addendum – the clock chimes correctly on the hour – it will chime 7 times at 7 o’clock. When the clock reaches 7:30, though, it will chime 7 times AGAIN. 8:00, 8 times. 8:30, 8 times, etc. It’s only supposed to chime once on the half hour.
